Jo Matheson is utterly devestated when she learns that her goddaughter was among the twenty-six people killed in a Pennsylvania schoolyard by a deranged loner. Those feelings are compounded by rage when Sam Jackson, an egotistical right-wing TV pundit, publicly blames the parents of the dead children for the tragedy. As his ratings climb and he's asked to run for Congress, Jo is overcome by the need to do something and makes the rash decision to kidnap his ten-year-old daughter.
