Sunil and Hima meet as India divides in two and move to Montreal to raise a family, living through two Quebec referendums. Their daughter Rani becomes obsessed with Serge, the nationalistic frontman of a Québécois supergroup, and a chance encounter leads Rani to babysit Serge's adopted daughter from Vietnam, Mélanie. Years later, Rani is a guidance counsellor who helps Mélanie as she struggles with her identity, and Rani's longtime fascination with Serge's music casts a strange shadow over their friendship.
