Hedy Bercu, a Jewish woman, flees to Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, during the German occupation in World War II. She finds a job working for the Germans as a translator while working against them. She becomes friends with an understanding German officer. And she soon discovers that her survival will depend not just on her own courage, but on the community she has come to treasure and a man who should be her enemy.
